Written by Forsetlund, Henriette Næss | 04. February 2021

For eSmart Systems, the user experience is the window through which the world experiences our brand and our products, and we could not do without our highly valued UX designers. They not only ensure that our customers are getting the very best out of our products and services, but that our software itself is as easy-to-use as possible. In this interview, Christine Mjærum, one of our UX designers, shares her passion for creating innovative products, her path to eSmart Systems, and why she is a proud eSmarter.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I started my education as an adult after several years of working in customer service. In 2016 I earned my bachelor's degree as an Industrial Design Engineer from Østfold University College. During my studies, I developed an interest in energy and digital design. I moved forward with my career by pursuing that direction.

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my two boys, being outdoors, cooking, hanging with friends, and having fun. I am also frequently found at rock concerts and festivals.

When did you join eSmart Systems, and what is your role in the company?

I joined eSmart Systems in October 2019 as a UX Designer. UX is short for User Experience, which is a process to create meaningful products and great experiences for the users. As designers, we often challenge the why, what, and how. A powerful user interface bridges the distance between the human brain and the digital product. We are constantly solving problems creatively in subjects such as design, usability, and function.

My role alongside the product development team is to provide the users of Grid Vision™ a seamless experience while increasing the quality of inspections utilizing the technology we develop at eSmart Systems.

What inspires you to work every day?

I learn new things and get challenged every day, which is key for me to thrive. Creating innovative products requires an interdisciplinary team, my team's knowledge and skills is my inspiration. We constantly influence and optimize how we all work together, which helps everyone thrive and succeed.

Additionally, seeing and hearing feedback on our products, both in the market and from users, is what makes me feel proud of what we are doing.

How did the recruitment process go for you?

eSmart Systems announced an open position for a Senior UX Designer. I did not meet all their criteria, so I never thought I would get the job. I think being highly motivated is what got me the job.

The recruitment process was really thorough but fun. First I was interviewed by a recruiter, and then I had three sequential interviews with key members and leaders of eSmart Systems. Prior to the interviews, I was sent a few tasks to solve that I had to present along with my portfolio. Both the recruiter and the eSmarters always made me feel comfortable and relaxed. A lot of laughs and a good atmosphere is what I remember from the process.

Why did you choose eSmart Systems?

When eSmart announced the job opening, I wasn't looking for a new position, but during my studies, a couple of my fellow students and I decided to work with 'energy' as a topic for our bachelor thesis, and I discovered eSmart Systems. I started following them on social media which increased my interest in the company. I was amazed by the innovative technology and how it could disrupt the energy field. Since that moment, I stayed in contact with eSmart Systems always looking for an opportunity to collaborate or work with them. So, when I saw the position, I had to give it a try. I still can't believe this journey turned out like this. I am a really proud eSmarter.

Do you have any tips you’d like to share with aspiring eSmarters?

I think it is important to communicate why are you an aspiring eSmarter, showing your motivation, and your passion for what we do. There is a lot of passion in eSmart Systems, for both energy and technology, so if you possess the same, you will fit right in! We are a mix of juniors and seniors, women and men, techies and non-techies, so do not hesitate to get in touch or apply for our open positions.
